Reutilisation of CO2 PDF E-mail
When hydrogen is produced from carbon, oil or natural gas, carbon dioxide is also produced. Harnessing carbon dioxide and its storage and/or reutilisation becomes thus an important option to be studied as long as hydrogen will be produced mainly from fossil fuels.

Once separated, CO2 must be stored permanently or reutilised. Options include geological storage (by injecting CO2 in the subterranean empty deposits of carbon, oil, gas or in salt water beds), storage in the oceans (although a great uncertainty exists about the storing time and environmental impacts ensuing from this option) and the mineral and biological storage (which joins chemically CO2 with natural minerals such as magnesium silicate). The potential of geological storage has been evaluated in the United States, Canada and Australia and a process of evaluation is under way in the EU.
